Frequently Asked Questions
We at the Data Sensing Lab are thrilled that people are interested in what we're doing. If you'd like to work with us, we'd be happy to hear from you! If you have questions about collaborating, please see the FAQ below; if your question is not answered here, just shoot us an email.
Will you instrument my conference or event?
We offer custom solutions as well as standard network deployments; or order some of our kits and deploy your own networks. Please email us and tell us more about what you have in mind, and we'll be happy to work with you to determine the best fit for your needs.
What do your sensors measure?
Right now, our standard sensor motes measure temperature, air pressure, humidity, light, motion, air quality (VOCs), and RF frequency.
What kind of routers or gateways do you use to bridge the sensors to your database?
We use ConnectPort X2e gateways to bring sensor data into Device Cloud. A multiple gateway strategy has been very important in our deployments because no on-site testing could be done before the events, so we used a highly conservative network topology to provide redundancy and ensure complete coverage.
What requirements do the Zigbee-connected gateways have?
Ideally, they'd have a DHCP-provided IP address and internet access, however DHCP isn't required; addresses can also be assigned manually.
Do they support wired ethernet?
Yes. They also support wi-fi, but if there's an HTML signup or confirmation page (terms of service and the like) then ethernet is easier.
What's the radius of coverage of each Digi gateway?
At least one radio needs to be within 100 meters of the gateway, but it's a mesh network so the data is relayed back through the mesh.
Will we need more than one gateway network?
Probably. It depends on how big a space you need to cover.
What bandwidth does each gateway need to push information to the internet?
Negligible. It's not large. You won't notice it against the background traffic unless you're trying to funnel the entire conference or event down a straw.
What options are available to connect the Digi gateway to the Device Cloud?
Digi’s ConnectPort gateways typically connect to Device Cloud over the Internet using a secure TCP connection. Ethernet, wi-fi, cellular, and satellite interfaces are available.
